On Russia trolling, and how to find people to play DOTA2 with?

Hello. I've been playing DOTA2 for 3-4 months now, however I have been unable to find people to play with. There have been some, whom with I still play sometimes, but there's no consistency to it, and somehow I just don't end up meeting anyone even though I've joined 10 DOTA2 themed Discord servers, joined Steam groups with a DOTA2 theme and posted ads about looking for people to play with. I also posted a couple of threads on Dota2pubs but haven't really found anyone yet.
As I've tried asking for advice from other people how to find people to play with, they usually respond with: If you have a good time playing with someone, invite them to your party and add them your friendslist.
This seems like fine advice, however, in this particular case it's not an applicable approach. The reason for this is not exactly related to DOTA2, but it's regardless necessary to explain, otherwise you don't have any chance of understanding why this is a problem.
I got into trouble with the Russian security services approximately in 2016. I don't know why exactly, I didn't ask for it, and before I got into this mess, I had never really paid any thought on this whole topic of you know espionage, and I was barely aware of the history of my country, which is Finland, and our neighboring Russia.
I used to write a political blog on a Finnish website called "Uusi Suomi", it's a fairly old paper with a history, and the platform is quite central to Finnish political debate online, though I didn't know it when I started writing there, not having paid much attention to politics to begin with. To start of for me it was some kind of a way to express myself or something like, and I didn't really feel like it was significant or in any way consequential. Slowly though I began to realize that it actually is quite significant, and I started to reflect on my earlier whimsical posts, and even felt a bit sorry for having written some of them. Regardless, I commented on some central themes to Finnish politics, like economics, which I got interested in, and EU and just about whatever happened to be on the news at the time. So this was possibly one of the reasons I got into trouble with the Russians. There's the chance, that they noticed that I'm just another person participating in the public debate here in Finland, and perhaps they assessed my attitudes towards Russia as sympathetic - but this was in a sense a misassessment if it did actually take place, I think they might have mistaken my neutral and objective stance and the willingness to make unpopular points as such.
Another possible reason is that my brother is a fairly big chief in a banking chain here in Finland, it's a smaller chain, not one of the major banks, but he is regardless in charge of several banks in Southern Finland. Maybe like a dozen or something like that. In addition I think there's a good chance he is involved with the Russians, having visited Russia during his life, and because of his contacts from his earlier years who included some interesting people so to speak.
So I think one of the above two reasons is most likely the cause I got into this mess, but no one has told me what the reason is, I'm basically just trying to guess. Anyway, to me it has been clear, that I've gotten into trouble with the Russians, but I haven't received any concrete demands or explanations for what this is about.
Basically I met this guy called Andrei as part of a construction school I went into in the autumn of 2016. However, I had already received some strange messages online, and had met a couple of people in person who behaved strangely, before starting this school. But I basically came to think that they might have been related to this Russia harassment case after the fact, once I had already found out I'm this kind of trouble, I'm kind of looking back and thinking wait actually these early events may have also been about this affair.
Anyway, I get the experience that this Andrei person is trying to intimidate me during the school, but it's kind of subtle and not your normal kind of intimidation. I think it incorporated resources obtained by hacking my computer at home, for an example, one day I found some schoolwork related files deleted from computer, and then I had this Andrei person ask me questions during school, which related to those files, and you know that was rather vague, but I distinctly remember noticing these files disappearing from my computer, and that Andrei had questions which were very specific to them. I could explain this part in more detail, but I don't think it's necessary.
Andrei was an Estonian-Russian guy, who spoke Russian as his mother's tongue. He was also, or still is rather, but I haven't seen him since the class, anyway he was a big guy like a bit shorter than 2m, but probably a bit more than 1.9m, and also fairly heavy set, like at least 100kg, if I had to guess probably 120kg. And he was also always wearing, well almost always, this black and orange jumpsuit, which I think was ADIDAS by brand. This is a side detail, but I remembered that black and orange were used as a symbol of Russian national identity in Estonia. Could be a coincidence of course, but he was Russian, so it would make sense. But this is just an impression about the person, so you can kind of imagine it. Anyway this whole thing escalated, and I even received some threats. One day in school, after this escalation had taken place, Andrei even said that "We are going to kill you" in Finnish to me in person, but there's a context to this event, and giving the full account would change how you interpret it a bit.
There was also another student in this construction school who I think was related to this case, he was according to his own statement, from Tadjikistan, which is a former part of the Soviet Union, but he was ethnically some kind of a mix of an arab or an asian, I think the language he spoke primarily was some derivative language of arabic.
And I also got people behaving strangely towards me in person elsewhere too, like when I went to the local flea markets, going to which was one of my hobbies at the time, and at this early stage, most of those people seemed to be Russian-speaking.
However, I also started getting some trolling online, and I'm not going to go into details about that this time, but it's still significant, because whatever I decided to try and do online, there was a fair chance I'd get some harassment, though subtle harassment, in any such context.
Therefore, when I bought this computer in October 2020, and started playing DOTA2, it was already expected, that I might get some kind of harassment related to this case. And so I did, but it's not easy to detect. Anyway there's a good chance that in a large chunk of the games I play, there's some people related to this trolling affair. They're like low level civilian recruits working on behalf of the Russians, but certainly they're not actual you know security services staff, more like some locals from which ever region around the world, and they're doing something subtle and minor, such as selecting a profile picture with cues related to this case, or doing something in game which kind of lets me know that they're maybe doing it on purpose. Anyway as part of that a central thing is to create an illusion, a perception that's kind of false, like I might have a troll related to this Russia case playing as my support, they might be working hard to make it look like they're playing an excellent support, while actually they're also trying to make lose on purpose, for an example. It's pretty hard to determine things like that with certainty, but there have been more than enough cues during this period of time, that I can confidently say there has been some of this Russia trolling involved. It's just difficult to point at a specific thing that would stand out a lot, because it's part of the methodology involved, to do things over time and kind of slowly conditioning the person to the harassment, rather than single big events which stand out a lot. Though there are exceptions too.
So I'll explain another event which definitely relates to DOTA2 as part of this harassment case.
On 25th of January, I wrote on facebook about Russian espionage in Finland. Although, I did this as response to some other kinds of harassment I had received from the Russians earlier, so I didn't just decide to do that out of the blue, but there was a distinct event to which I was responding to. I'm part of this 'defense' group on facebook, that talks about the defense of Finland. I don't really post there, just read some posts every now and then - rarely.
On 26th as I wake up and make myself some coffee, and do my morning routines, brush my teeth, do the dishes, feed the cats and so on, I decide to play some DOTA2. So I start the DOTA2 client, and notice that the behavior score report card shows up. My behavior score is grayed out and it says 1. So I'm wondering what this is about, and think that maybe the client isn't connected properly and that's why it can't get the actual behavior score, until I try to click the find game button, which is red. It also says that my matchmaking is disabled. Permanently. So I was banned, permanently. I was thinking did I actually break the rules to warrant this? No, it was pretty clear. I even checked the DOTA2 wiki for reasons that might lead to this, and none support that this was warranted.
So I'm fairly certain - and there was a clue prior to this too - that the Russians got me banned, as a response to my facebook post from the previous day. I contact Steam Support. They come back to me, and eventually the case is resolved. I tell them that this was probably done as a revenge for a political post about Russian espionage on facebook, and they come back to me and say they're convinced no outside influence was involved, but I was regardless banned erroneously. An erroneous permanent ban for no apparent reason, on the next day after such a post. Go figure.
Anyway my behavior score remains as 1. This becomes a minor issue, because I join a couple of parties to play with, and I don't have a microphone, but I can't write to the game chat because of the score. So I took note of it, but it got updated back to normal, after a round of 15 games.
Fast forward a few days. Someone here on Reddit messages me that there's a discord server I should join, and that the people on that server probably understand this Russia case, and that I might find people to play with, or something along those lines. The server is called RD2L EU, a some sort of private league, playing captain's mode with drafting of players. A lot of high rated players too.
So I join the chat and start talking about DOTA. I also tell them about this Russia harassment issue, a couple of people join the chat, and it's immediately fairly obvious they're most likely part of this trolling scheme, for one, they were claiming that my reddit thread was written in Russian. Which it obviously wasn't and it was a typical trick to kind of confuse and stress out someone. You start to think, well why is it in Russian? Anyway luckily I instantly realized that A) The post is written in english B) Their settings are autotranslating it via google or something and C) They're doing it on purpose and D) that they're not just doing it on purpose, but they're doing it on purpose because they're part of this Russia-trolling-affair
I nevermind that for the moment, and the discussion goes back to DOTA. I mention this Viper build I designed to deal with this trolling problem. Basically I made an unorthodox Viper build for playing midlane, that's difficult for people in my rank bracket to deal with. I'm basically Herald I, or actually, before I made this build to counter this Russia-trolling problem, I had 10 MMR literally. When I designed it, I got to like 400 or so, won like 9 games out of 10, until the Russia-trolls figured out how to deal with it. Well nevermind that.

Then, suddenly, someone in the chatroom says the following: "What's your behavior score?"
I respond: "Something like 9000, why?"
Then he says and continues: "I know of a guy who got put to behavior score 1 by the Russians"
Then I find myself kicked and banned from this server.

So obviously this was deliberate reference to the earlier events, which I just described, and the fact that this message was written just before I got kicked out, was clearly no coincidence, but unfortunately since I couldn't rejoin the server, I can't copypaste the backlog. Besides it could be edited or something.
Anyway, the point is that because of this type of thing, I get these Russia-trolls in random pub matches with me. I also get people related to this case approaching me on discord. And I have uncanny difficulty finding regular people - or just finding people in general - to play DOTA2 with, and I wouldn't want to try and find them from the pub matches due to this issue.
So I'd like your help with finding people to play DOTA2 with. Also if you want to add me on steam,
and you're +18, then my steamid is: 1140726503

Final call Finland! A remaining videogame from your country is missing!

Final Update (27.11.2020):
In the name of my preservation group, thanks so much for all the answers I've received from you.
I was kind of expecting this after not only seeing the comments you have send but my work after one year of research: This wasn't translated. I pretty much confirmed it after a private message with confidential information, pointing out that the game was never among the titles that teams in charge of suomi translations on those days had to deal.
Whether this Serial ID "SLES-03302" belongs to an unidentified regional release from other country or a cancelled release for the suomi people, who knows. Another proof of this, was confirming no PC Version translated to suomi was found, but the game was officialy released in english with backcover description for Finland. As I said, every regional release received a translated port for PS1 and PC and this was not the case.
Lego Rock Raiders is the only game from PSX confirmed to have suomi inside, which we knew for long.
http://redump.org/disc/15082/
However, this isn't that bad. Sometimes in gaming preservation, confirming something doesn't exist is harder than confirming it exists.
Again, thanks so much for your help! We'll keep working in the future to make sure we preserve all the gaming stuff we can, no matter its provenance.
In fact, who knows if there are unknown games from Sony Playstation 1, 2 or Portable still undocumented from Finland. We know for sure we are missing the following games from PS3:
BCES 02044 SingStar SuomiBileet
BCES 01915 SingStar SuomiHelmet
BCES 00847 SingStar SuomiHitit
BCES 01735 SingStar SuomiHuiput
BCES 00344 SingStar SuomiPop
BCES 01255 SingStar SuomiSuosikit
BCES 00829 Buzz! Suuri Musavisa

Hi Finland!
Long ago i posted this on your Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/Finland/comments/bwbmis/ey_finland_we_are_looking_to_preserve_some/
And time after, this:
https://www.reddit.com/Finland/comments/cogp63/one_last_call_finland_a_remaining_videogame_from/
People was really kind but we werent succesful, so I'm trying one final time, so we can finish this project, so here we go!
In case you dont want to read that much,
TLDR : Gaming preservation group called Redump needs to know if a finnish version for Lego Island 2 on Sony Playstation 1 (or PC) was ever released, confirming that is the last unknown european title to confirm its existence. Would be nice to catch it and dump it in order to finish for the first time in history, the complete European Playstation 1 set.
My name is Diego and i come from a platform called VideoGaming Preservation Collective.
https://www.preservegames.org/
Our platform works as a nexus for lot of different videogaming preservation groups and different people from the community. In this case, help is needed for Redump.org for optical media preservation (A.K.A. all kind of discs!)
http://redump.org/
In the last years, strong efforts were made by the members from this community in order to preserve the full set of games from Sony Playstation 1 & 2, a couple of amazing videoconsoles which we are fighting really hard to preserve every single game ever released. Those efforts included spending a lot of money and coordinating a lot of people to buy and bring those games to people across Europe (like me, in Spain) to obtain a proper data backup and document it.
For the first time in years, we are completely close to document every single detail and data from these game across Europe and Australia, what it's known as the PAL zone (being USA and rest of America, the NTSC zone, and Japan, the NTSC-J zone). And that's the reason we are calling this Reddit, to ask if any of you could help us in our tasks, by donating (or selling if it's needed) these games for gaming preservation.
The remaining one, that we havent been able to even confirm its existence is:
"LEGO Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge" with Serial ID " SLES-03302" .
We are really desperate to find this one, as we have great illusions on finishing your country's set of games for Playstation 1!
The main task is to document the disc and all the info around it, plus obtaining a clean backup (its a simple process made by a tool called IsoBuster). This process can be done by anyone owning the disc if you have a PC with disc reader. So, if you are still interested in helping us but dont wont to give out the game, you dont have to, as you can follow our steps (which doesnt go beyond than copying some info writen in the disc and dumping it with IsoBuster).
In case you wonder, I received permission from Lego Central Office Support in Denmark to encourage me save these games. Seems that lot of this content was lost after the Gaming division was bought by Warner Bros gaming division, so they gave permission to save this game, understanding this task is not related to piracy.
Thanks all so much for your atention!

Let's talk a Finnish icon: The Ismo Alanko primer

I was challenged into writing a primer on one of Finland's primary songwriters of all time by u/Zhanteimi at the LetsTalkMusic discord. So here's an album-by-album runthrough of his career!
Context
No artist's career begins with the first album, so naturally nor did Alanko's. Long story short, he was born in a highly artistic family (mother a poet, all siblings musicians), picked cello as his instrument of choice, found rock (especially the Hurriganes debut) and picked a guitar, wrote his first song 'Suck and Fuck All Night Long' (no recordings of this exist, but apparently one of his bands named itself after the song), and formed a number of bands with varying levels of success. His most succesful pre-Hassisen Kone band was a prog band called Sight, which got on the second place in the prog section of Finnish Rock Championship competition (in 1977 or 1978). After he finished high school in the spring of 1979, he moved to Stockholm for the summer. This turned out to be the decision that became the catalyst for huge parts of his career, including...
Hassisen Kone - Täältä tullaan Venäjä
While in Stockholm, Alanko caught wind of a new wave of rock beginning in Finland. A breath of fresh air in the previously stale rock scene. He returned to Joensuu and put together a band from his bandmates from Sight (Reijo Heiskanen and Harri Kinnunen), and Harri's then 17-year-old brother Jussi. They eventually named the band Hassisen Kone, after a sewing machine store in town (the deeply religious shopkeeper was not amused).
The band recorded an album-length demo in 1979 and were signed on a label relatively quickly. They were also qualified to enter the 1980 Finnish Rock Championship competition (even though the judges nearly disqualified them, for they thought they might be professional musicians performing under fake names), which they won, gaining reputation preceding the recording of their debut album.
In August of 1980, the band released Täältä tullaan Venäjä. Propelled by arguably the biggest hit single in Alanko's career, Rappiolla [which was hilariously covered by Metallica recently (which was spontaneously responded to by Ismo Alanko himself)], the album became a smash hit. The album provides variety from straight-up new wave punk to talkingheadsian grooves, schlager punk, simplified swing jazz, ska-infused rock, to whatever you'd categorise 'Viimeinen rock ennen aivokuolemaa' as. It's an ambitious yet consistent whole but, in my opinion, the weakest of the three Hassisen Kone albums. The youthful anarchic feel it has can be refreshing every now and then, but this burst of energy from an obviously young (only two of the bandmembers even in their 20s, band only half a year old) band is redirected better on the follow-up.
Hassisen Kone - Rumat sävelet
Following the release of their debut, the band found themselves in a position that many acts today would both fear and envy: they played hundreds of gigs in the second half of 1980 and the first half of 1981. The gruesome touring around the country took a toll on the young band, but that's only barely comparable to the toll that the audience took on them. For example, as time went by, the band grew tired of the audience drunkenly demanding 'Rappiolla', so they stopped playing the song altogether. This time of maturing and growing more and more cynical reflected on their sophomore effort.
Rumat sävelet should not necessarily be described as bleak per se, but it is certainly darker, tighter, and more mature than the band's debut. The band tackles sounds ranging from quasi-prog expression to post-punk, punk, psychobilly, and they take the talkingheadsian qualities into a sharper direction. The lyrics touch upon issues like love, exploitation, and sex (it's curious to think that probably the most explicit Finnish song about sex before this album was about "curly armpit hair", while Alanko dares to sing about penetration itself). I have to admit that I have a bit of a bias when it comes to this one though, as it's undoubtedly my favourite album of all time.
Hassisen Kone - Harsoinen teräs (and High Tension Wire)
In 1981, the band participated on a riverboat tour with a couple of other punk acts. During this tour, the bassist broke (drugs), Alanko met "Safka" Pekkonen, and the band was generally put under huge stress as the diet consisting mainly of alcohol began burning them down and their every move was documented by either film makers Mika and Aki Kaurismäki or the columnist documenting the tour for a zine. Despite all this, some of the better live recordings of the band come from this tour, and both the live album and the Kaurismäki documentary are worth digging up for the music.
After the tour, the band expanded into a septet with the addition of a keyboardist (Pekkonen), a saxophonist (Antti Seppo), and a percussionist (Hannu Porkka). The final form of the band was shaped during the rehearsals by the departure of guitarist Heiskanen, who was replaced by the guitar wizard Jukka Orma.
Released in March of 1982, Harsoinen teräs is the band's most artistically ambitious work. It's an album combining the band's prog leanings seamlessly with the band's new wave leanings, a polished whole that takes cues from I don't even know where. Reggae at least on a couple of tracks, prog and new wave on most, but the general sound is unlike anything I've ever encountered. The album was re-recorded in English as High Tension Wire later on in the year, after a tour had slightly tightened the band's sound. The decision to do so apparently came after the decision to disband the band, which makes it a very baffling addition to Hassisen Kone's discography. You'd think that they'd release an album in English as an attempt to break into international markets, right?
Sielun Veljet - Sielun Veljet
After Hassisen Kone was disbanded (in August 1982), Alanko had a schlager rock project that eventually turned into Sielun Veljet by December. The band was comprised of Alanko, Orma, a drummer veteran Alf Forsman, Alanko's Stockholm contact Jouko Hohko on bass, Vinski Viholainen doing lighting, and a future cult legend Jouni Mömmö doing "weird noises".
Sielun Veljet were signed in early 1983, but they refused to record a studio album because Viholainen's lighting work wouldn't show in a studio recording. Instead, as a compromise, they agreed on recording a live album where "the lighting would affect the ambiance". They set out to do this on a tour they began on March, planning on recording the first show and the last one. However, fate interfered and Orma accidentally cut tendons from his fingers during the tour while cutting bread, which made the recordings from the last show basically unusable due to his difficulties in adjusting to the situation (a very punk move to finish the tour even with torn tendons, by the way).
The live album is punk/post-punk goodness. It's noisy, no-wavey rock that really shows how the band took all the drugs in the process of writing these harsh, repetitive songs. It also shows that Alanko wished to abandon messing around with intricate compositions in favour of a more stripped and primal expression.
Sielun Veljet - Lapset
In summer of 1983, the band brightened up a bit to record this odd EP in a style following directly from the debut. It's angular and distorted, yet the melodies are more melodic and jamming less bleak. It's also the home of the only a capella punk song I've ever heard.
Sielun Veljet - Hei soturit
In 1984, Sielun Veljet took their first coherent step toward a pop/rock idiom with their first studio album. Hei soturit is the awkward outlier between the band's grimy punk era and commercial rock era. It feels like a punk band working with a producer who doesn't understand punk, but even the clumsy production doesn't entirely hide the fact that some of these songs are absolutely iconic. From punk to garage rock, general oddness, and flirting even with metal, this selection of songs does provide good variety for anyone digging deeper in Alanko's body of work.
Sielun Veljet - L'amourha
The Sielun Veljet breakthrough album! The beginning of their rock era of albums, an only mildly angular affair with anthemic choruses and a muscular production. It was recorded after the band had toured all over Europe, honing their sound and Alanko finding a lot to say about international affairs and the human condition.
There are a plenty of anecdotes from the time of release of this album. The song 'On mulla unelma' was written by Alanko in Spain, when he was recovering from a disease (can't remember which one. Dysentery?) and bitter about nationalism, and it caused quite a scandal when the band unexpectedly debuted it on live television. They performed an impromptu Red Riding Hood play on their album release party instead of playing music. One of the members went missing in Russia for days after the band found a corpse. All of their instruments were stolen in Spain. There'd a lot to unpack from 1984-5 alone.
Sielun Veljet - Kuka teki huorin
The follow-up to L'amourha takes the band to a funkier place. It's a minor downgrade from the previous effort, a slightly directionless and overpolished effort that has diverse variety from RHCP-like funk rock to tango-infused rock, tribal chants, and what's essentially watered down imitation of their earlier work. It's an easy album to criticise, yet I don't find ever to be outright bad. A lot of it is extremely forgettable though
L'amourder - Ritual and Shit-Hot
Sielun Veljet recorded a bunch of their songs in English as L'amourder. Most of them follow the originals very closely, but there are a few surprises. The biggest change is on the translation of 'Tuulelta vastauksen saan', which has been turned into a cover of Bob Dylan's 'Blowin' in the Wind'.
Sielun Veljet - Suomi - Finland
Suomi - Finland begins the last era of the band, as this album brings more acoustic instruments to the mix and begins to flirt with psychedelia in a way that will culminate on the follow-up. It feels like a breaking point for the band, as it sprawls on multiple directions at once, the musicians seemingly having lost focus. It feels like a band slowly drifring apart, yet it remains consistently captivating as the different influences come together in this chaotic work.
"Various Artists" - Onnenpyörä
Sielun Veljet performed under a number of false identities on their Onnenpyörä-tour, four of which make an appearance on this recording. All of these are cover bands of sorts, and each one of them had a different repertoire of songs they played on these wildly differing sets. The most noteworthy of these personae are the pavillion dance band Kullervo Kivi ja Gehenna-yhtye and the rock band Leputation of the Slaves, the two having the most songs on the record.
Sielun Veljet - Softwood Music Under Slow Pillars
Who would have thought that the noisy punk band in 1983 would eventually release what could be called a psychedelic flamenco album in 1989? Many factors come together here, as the band continues on their effort to sell their music internationally by making the biggest left turn in memory. Orma's fascination with flamenco combines here with influences Alanko picked up in India and what could be called a somewhat logical progression from the budding psychedelia of Suomi - Finland. It's a weird album, that's for sure. A bit inconsistent, but easily among the strangest albums I've ever heard.
Ismo Alanko - Kun Suomi putos puusta
In 1990, Alanko found himself in a situation where Sielun Veljet had almost run its course and he could finally start building a solo career. He recorded this solo debut as a quasi-concept album about rural flight, combining the various interest he wasn't able to pursue with the band into a unique singesongwriter album of sorts. It's a classic album and, in some ways, an ideal entry point into Alanko's work as it feels like it's his personal expression in its purest form.
The music on the album sounds mainly like pop rock of sorts, but it also takes cues from melancholic singesongwriter stuff, joyous showtunes, post-punk akin to Nick Cave's work, and some field recording experiments. It finds a good balance between artistic ambition and catchiness, and it's home to some of the most iconic tracks in Ismo Alanko songbook.
Sielun Veljet - Musta laatikko
Do you know Tom Waits' Orphans? This one is kind of like that. Three discs filled with random stuff recorded over years.
The first disc, "Muistinmenetys", is one third a new studio album (very weird new direction to take, something that feels like a cross between chill hippie jamming and 80s dance pop), one third music from some production, and one third short excerpts from live performances. The second disc, "Taudinkuva", is mainly live performances of late 80s Sielun Veljet songs, Tuomari Nurmio covers, and some other oddities. And finally, the third disc, "Isältä pojalle", is a full pavillion dance set, the band LARPing as a suave and jazzy house band playing waltz, tango, schlager, and anything that's really expected of them.
This album is definitely a skippable one, but there are a few gems that an Ismo Alanko fan might get a lot out of. The flamenco pieces are cool, the Tuomari Nurmio covers are nice (more about those later), and that pavillion dance set is unexpectedly fun, especially if you're not already familiar with the tradition.
Ismo Alanko - Jäätyneitä lauluja
Alanko goes electronic! This album was originally lauded as cutting edge and a sign of significant artistic growth, but it has definitely fallen in popularity over the years. It sounds extremely like a product of its time, so if you like non-industrial synthpop-y rock from 90s, this is exactly your thing. Overall, it's still very surprising how many Alanko live staples come from this album though, and how some of his live bands have improved on all of them.
Ismo Alanko - Taiteilijaelämää
If someone doesn't think that Kun Suomi putos puusta is Alanko's magnum opus, they usually pick this one. Taiteilijaelämää feels like a combination of the first two solo albums (acoustic, electric, and electronic joining hands in harmony), but brought into the mid-90s rock idiom. The result is an interesting album that lacks real highs but remains consistently accessible, and the one Ismo Alanko work I've heard to have resonated with Beck fans for some reason.
Ismo Alanko - I-r-t-i
I made the mistake of learning that this album was written in only two weeks (because Alanko wanted to test himself), and now that's all I can think of while listening to it. This does feel halfbaked. The accessible rock sound it has is underproduced and covers up lazy songwriting more than once. That said, Alanko has later on proven that some of these songs can be absolutely amazing live, and the demo-like quality many of these tracks have can be seen as a feature instead of a bug. Pushing its flaws aside, I feel that it is underappreciated as an album, and feel like its high points deserve more attention.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Pulu
Säätiö was an interesting group. I'm honestly still a bit unclear whether they should be considered Alanko's backing band, a band that just happened to capitalise on his name, or a fullblown collective of musicians. Alanko's statements concerning the group together with the changing lineups on Säätiö albums both point to all three options. What I do know is that the band has two distinct eras, the first one kickstarted by Pulu.
I genuinely believe that the first iterarion of Säätiö is the most important band Alanko worked with. The amount of pure talent in that band is staggering with Jussi Kinnunen (Hassisen Kone) on bass, Teho Majamäki (HC Andersen, Tapani Rinne, Ismo Alanko Teholla) on percussion, Kimmo Pohjonen (you will want to check his solo stuff) on accordion, and Marko Timonen (Värttinä, Tuomari Nurmio) on drums giving Alanko's songwriting a fascinating folk rock spin, reeking of schlager and eastern mysticism. Pulu is an album that seeps nostalgia, is radical enough to upset traditional folk nerds, is accessible enough to have produced multiple Alanko live staples, and is significant enough a twist on Alanko's tropes to sound fresh even in his eclectic body of work. Yet, I feel like it's so self-referential that I feel like recommending it as anyone's first Ismo Alanko album could be a mistake.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Luonnossa
Säätiö playing acoustic renditions from the entire Ismo Alanko songbook, from Täältä tullaan Venäjä to Pulu. An exciting set, and definitely one of the best live albums I've ever heard. The band reworks this wide variety of songs into captivating folk rock, transforming the music into forms that defy expectations. There are some duds though, but not all fan favourites can sound great with just one band.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Sisäinen solarium
This is possibly the weirdest Ismo Alanko album to this date. It continues with nearly the same lineup as on Pulu, but takes the music in a radically new direction, exploring what modernised folk could be rather than wallowing on nostalgia. This means updating the largely acoustic instrumentation with both electric and electronic instruments, and creating an unpredictable tapestry of music with influences that are surprisingly difficult to pinpoint. Some say this kind of experimentation cheapens traditional folk (which is something I can agree with regarding some songs on this album), but I'm not sure if such a clearcut statement can be made of the full album. It's certainly aiming for a sound of its own.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Hallanvaara
This is where Säätiö's status as a band becomes complicated. There's absolutely no reason to call this anything but an Ismo Alanko solo album, so marketing it as an Ismo Alanko Säätiö album is baffling to say the least. I mean, the only constants on this album are Alanko himself, the producemulti-instrumentalist Riku Mattila, and various symphonic elements (I don't want to downplay the work the symphonic orchestra and the string section do on this album, but they have been used quite haphazardly). There are three members from the previous Säätiö albums involved in this project: Marko Timonen on nine tracks, Samuli Laiho on seven tracks, and Kimmo Pohjonen on one track. In addition to this, there's the bassist of the next iteration of Säätiö, Jarno Karjalainen, on six tracks. Thus, there are Säätiö band members playing on the majority of these tracks, but never as a full band.
That all being said, I believe this to be the best Säätiö album. The melancholic pieces are beautifully fragile, the pop tracks are catchy, the massive songs are massive, and the atmospheric pieces are chillingly well-arranged. And even the weaker songs here are excellent live, making this album probably the richest one to mine for a live set of any kind.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Elävää musiikkia
Honestly, this feels like a bit of a throwaway live album. On one hand, these rock renditions of a great setlist of songs are unique but, on the other hand, none of these performances improve on the studio recordings. 'Kansallispäivä' and 'Julkinen eläin' come really close though, both being sharper and meaner than the 80s versions.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Minä ja pojat
The first album with the second iteration of the band. Fuzzy rock in similar vein to Smashing Pumpkins and their kin, but played through the lense of Alanko's style of songwriting. It's never as hard-hitting or catchy as an album by a great rock band would be -- all of the songs soften up during the chorus -- but the youthful and slightly naivistic touch is welcome after a string of artistically ambitious albums. That said, I'm only attached to a single song on the whole album, which is definitely not a good sign.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Ruuhkainen taivas
The second (and last) studio album of the second iteration of Säätiö is a different beast than the first one, taking the rock approach to a slightly more complex direction. It's more mature and chromatic than the first album, yet I personally find it to sound slightly less inspired. However, at the same time, it does have more tracks that I would consider keepers and the general sound is harder to define. Thus, it's definitely a divisive album, conflicting.
I'm not sure how to describe the sound of this album. It's unmistakeably early 2000s rock, sounding like an average Finnish rock band from the era, yet the songwriting and the production also remind me of the band Wire out of all things. It's a digestible alternative/indie rock sound, whenever it doesn't abruptly go in a new direction.
Sielun Veljet - Otteita Tuomari Nurmion laulukirjasta
Remember those random Tuomari Nurmio covers on Musta Laatikko? Turns out, Sielun Veljet recorded a full album of those in (I assume) late 80s. They didn't end up using those recordings for anything, so they were packed away and stored somewhere. Years went by and a good portion of those recordings were destroyed due to poor storing conditions, but someone was eventually inspired to put the surviving songs to good use.
You'll be in for a treat, if you like Sielun Veljet and have never heard anything by Tuomari Nurmio. Most of these covers are originally from Nurmio's early 80s albums, his strange new wave turned into the angular rock Sielun Veljet perfected. Some of these songs only barely work, some sound like Sielun Veljet originals, but most are just serviceable covers. It's still a good album though.
Ismo Alanko Teholla - Blanco spirituals
After putting Säätiö on hold (perhaps indefinitely), Alanko joined forces with Teho Majamäki, the first iteration Säätiö percussionist. Together they stripped down a number of Ismo Alanko songbook staples to a form they could perform as a duo, essentially bringing the strengths of Alanko's live performances alone together with the strengths of him performing with a small ensemble. This endeavour proved succesful, so the two recorded two albums of original music as well.
The music of Blanco spirituals is surprisingly full. The two musicians fill space well, with Alanko singing and playing chord instruments (mainly guitar and piano), while Majamäki stretches himself as thin as possible, working a drumset, vibes, an array of percussions, an oscillating delay pedal, and singing backing vocals. It's usually at least two of those at the same time, often three. Him working in a live environment is a sight to behold.
This is honestly one of my favourite Ismo Alanko albums. The stripped down arrangements bring the most out of Alanko's songwriting. The selection of songs highlight very different sides of his style, from theatrical piano ballads to singalong acoustic guitar romps, silly pop songs, and trance-inducing rock. It's by no means a perfect album, but these simple songs all work in one way or another.
Sielun Veljet - Kansan parissa (1-4)
Archival live recordings of sets recorded around 1989-1991. The first one is a typical Sielun Veljet set, the second one filled with Tuomari Nurmio covers, the third one is material from Softwood Music Under Slow Pillars, and the fourth one is a mix of subtle experimentation, new tracks, and deep cuts. Quite a comprehensive collection of live music. However, only few tracks are really worth keeping, including the electrifying high-tempo performance of 'Lammassusi' and the prototypical version of Alanko's 'Don Quiote'.
Ismo Alanko Teholla - Onnellisuus
The simplicity of the previous album is gone, replaced by a polished and highly produced pop sound. The DIY duo sound gives way to a more layered style, where synths, samples, and doubled vocals are added to the band's sound. Acoustic instruments are largely replaced by electric guitars and synths, turning the folksy garage band sound to a sleak and radio-friendly beast. If the fact that I just phrased the same exact thing in three ways didn't clue you in yet, I'm not particularly fond of this change of direction. However, I've seen this ridiculously often called the best Ismo Alanko album since the 90s, so it does appeal to the masses.
If you like 2010s pop and are looking for a decent gateway to Alanko's music, this could be the album to start with. It's accessible.
Hassisen Kone - 20 vuotta myöhemmin
Hassisen Kone had a reunion in 2000. They played a show that was both filmed and recorded. It's an interesting document of musicians playing music they wrote 20 years earlier. However, it ultimately sounds a bit tired compared to both the tight playing on their studio recordings and the energy levels on their 80s live recordings.
Ismo Alanko - Maailmanlopun sushibaari
Remember when I said that most pick between Kun Suomi putos puusta and Taiteilijaelämää as Alanko's magnum opus? Well, this is that one for me. I'm not saying that to imply that it would be his best album, but it's the album where he finally brings his disparate influences together in a coherent but eclectic way. If Kun Suomi putos puusta is where Alanko's artistic voice is at its purest, this is where it is at its maturest and most representative of the multi-faceted artist he has become during his career.
More or less incidentally, this is also Alanko's midlife crisis album. It's not entirely thematic -- who even knows what 'Kuusilmä' is about? -- but it does touch upon themes like growing old, dying, passing the torch, losing one's touch, and liking the colour grey. It's not quite on the nose, but you don't exactly have to dissect the lyrics to find those undercurrents.
So what does the album sound like? It's lighter than you'd imagine based on the central themes. There's rock, funk, subtle latin feel, a capella, pop, traditional folk, and even an ambitious rock opera about what sounds like a zombie apocalypse. It's fairly eclectic, making it a nice first solo album to release in nearly two decades.
Ismo Alanko - 33 1/3: Kolmannesvuosisata taiteilijaelämää
This is the Ismo Alanko live album I recommend people to start with. Are these performances as exciting as their studio versions? No. But I'd argue that they don't have to be. The main strength this recording has is its uniformity. The songs are played in a generic rock band style, but it doesn't change the fact that the setlist is good and diverse. There's no compilation that would dive this deep in such a digestible manner. Essentially, this is the middle-of-the-road pick that gives an excellent cursory look into a prolific artist's entire body of work (up until 2013).
Ismo Alanko - Ismo Kullervo Alanko
Considering how introspective and self-reflective the previous album is, it's surprising that Alanko decided to name this one after himself. It works though. The songs are produced sparser and airier than on any other Ismo Alanko album, making the music feel intimate and almost confessional. It feels like you're sitting in the same room with him, as he opens up to you. Amazingly produced album.
Ismo Alanko - Pannaanko pakasteet pieneen pussiin?
To be frank, I don't think this EP is an essential release. It's noteworthy for the modern hobo blues feel it has, and for having one of the very few covers Alanko has recorded so far, but none of these songs have an iconic feel to them. The best I can say about it is that none of the songs are bad, but neither are they memorable.
Ismo Alanko - Yksin Vanhalla
I wish more band-focused artists performed live alone every now and then. An arrangement stripped down to just vocals and an instrument (in Alanko's case, usually acoustic guitar, piano, or cello) turns every song into something entirely different. However, the lyrics grow in significance as instruments are dropped, so your mileage may vary with this one. I still enjoy it though.
Pohjonen Alanko - Northern Lowland
Alanko collaborates with Kimmo Pohjonen and Tuomas Norvio to bring us an electronic neon-shamanic album. Primal chants and vocalisations blending together with beats ranging from harsh to chill and breakbeat-y. It's a fascinating EP, even if highly gimmicky and lacking a sense of direction. Besides, this stuff will always be better live than on a studio recording.
Ismo Alanko - Minä halusin olla niin kuin Beethoven
And finally, the latest Ismo Alanko album, where he takes yet another left turn. This one was mainly recorded by Alanko alone in a studio, but eventually a drummer and a keyboardist were brought in to round up the sound. And what a sound it is! Youthful indie rock with a production that's stuck somewhere between the 00s and the 80s. If it were not for 58-year-old Alanko's vocals and eccentric riffing, I could very well believe this to be a debut album by ambitious 20-somethings.
Summary
Since Alanko's full albums are not readily available on many countries (especially the US), I'll provide a summary that's somewhere between a longish TL;DR, a series of recommendations, and a quick-glance overview of his career.

Discussion
What is your opinion on Ismo Alanko? I personally enjoy how prolific and eclectic he has been, and I find it a shame that most of his work has never left Finland. I can especially imagine punk fans easily getting into his 80s work.

What’s Changed?

Weapons

  • Players are now able to inspect their primary and secondary weapons directly while playing. Simply hold down the commorose button, and press the reload button to take a look.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the smoke grenade’s visual effect to flicker.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause players to sometimes use their primary weapons as syringes during the revive animation.
  • RSC - Fixed an issue that would result in a visual problem when reloading the weapons with some specific soldier skins.
  • M1928A1 - The weapons shadow no longer looks like it has a fore-grip.
  • Fixed an uncommon bug which made it look like soldiers used an ammo pouch to gain health back, or used a health pouch to gain ammo.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the grenade launcher on the Tromboncino to be unusable if the weapon was dropped and then picked back up.
  • Flaregun Radius and TTL re-balance: Flares last longer in general, and vehicle flares cover larger areas.
  • Fixed a bug that would enable the Panzerbüchse 39 to fire multiple times in a row.
  • Fixed a bug with the ricochet tracer visual effect which made it look like it was going in the opposite direction of its original trajectory.
  • Fixed an issue where healing rates could stack between self-heal pouch and medical crate (only the highest rate will now apply).
  • Increased medical crate aura regeneration rate to 16HP/s from 12HP/s as a result of healing rates no longer stacking.
  • Improved detection of fire damage against soldiers. This will reduce situations where players can take fire damage while not being visibly close enough from the fire.
  • Increased incendiary grenade radius to 4.5m from 4m to better match the effect.
  • Increased the Incendiary grenade damage duration to 7s from 6.5s to better match the effect.
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused the health and ammo crates to be deployed below the ground when deployed whilst prone.

Balance Changes

We have increased the rate of fire of the Model 8 because of its inferior reload, and its magazine when compared to the RSC.
  • Increased rate of fire from 180 to 200 and from 200 to 225 with the Trigger Job specialization.
The Suomi saw another small adjustment recoil adjustment to better position it against the M1928A1:
  • Reduced vertical recoil from 0.72 to 0.69.
  • Reduced recoil pattern slightly.
The Lewis Gun has been made a bit less accurate in sustained fire to separate it more from the Bren:
  • Increased horizontal recoil from 0.45 to 0.48.
Fixed an issue that often made all fully automatic, and burst fire weapons much less accurate and predictable than intended when burst-firing.
  • Since the M1935 PG had been heavily affected by this, its horizontal recoil has been increased to offset the drastic increase of accuracy when bursting.
  • Increased horizontal recoil from 0.3 to 0.375 and from 0.225 to 0.3 when using the Ported Barrel specialization on the M1935 PG.
Additional Changes:
  • Improved the visibility of aperture sights against all backgrounds.
  • Improved the MP28 front sight, it is now thinner and easier to aim with.

Soldier

  • Fixed an issue that would cause players to slowly glide across the terrain whilst waiting to start a round.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause players to be seen playing the swimming animations whilst on the ground.
  • Fixed an issue where players could often be seen with low animation quality in high density areas.
  • Fixed an issue where it would sometimes be possible to collide with soldiers that are dead.
  • Soldier collision is now disabled as soon as the player dies, this means it will now be possible to move through players faster which will prevent cases where you can get blocked by a soldier you just killed.
  • Improvements to the bleed out state that should decrease the chance of players getting stuck in a bleed out state.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the soldier to clip with the camera when opening a door while switching weapons.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause an infinite death state if a player was roadkilled right after being revived.
  • Fixed a bug that would not trigger the temporary slow down penalty after using the bayonet charge.
  • Fixed an issue where players would be able to jump whilst charging.
  • Holding down the melee button no longer blocks the sprint and jump input.
  • Improved the vaulting animation when players are using the Revolver.
  • Fixed an issue where a soldier would sometimes get blocked whilst vaulting over medium sized obstacles.
  • Players are no longer blocked from throwing health and ammo pouches while at the same time firing a weapon at full auto. The firing will now correctly pause to throw a pouch.
  • Improvements to players that die while using a parachute - the sound will no longer cutoff if the player redeploys while parachuting, and we have removed the body falling sound effect if the player is in the air.
  • Improved soldier ragdoll behavior to decrease the risk of them getting the “hanging from the hips” bug.
  • Fixed an issue where soldiers could get stuck against collision with hard-edged assets, like for example the edge of a bridge railing.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the revived players to be in T pose when the reviver cancels the revive animation.
  • Fixed an animation bug that could sometimes cause certain soldiers to be seen moving around in T pose.
  • Fixed an exploit that would allow medics to endlessly throw medical pouches at each other.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to deploy the bipod on shallow water.
  • Improved activation consistency of the sliding functionality.
  • Added support to choose between press or double-tap to activate sliding (default is double-tap).
  • Increased Sliding cool down to 2s from 1.5s.
  • Fixed an issue where soldiers teleport to an old position when exiting a vehicle.
  • Fixed an issue where a soldier could vault through ceilings above stairs on Operation Underground.
  • Players in shallow water can be revived now.
  • Players can no longer get revived while in mid-air, which would cause players to end up under the terrain in some rare cases.

Vehicles

  • JU-88 bottom gunner now properly shows hitmarkers when doing damage.
  • Fixed a rare bug that would cause players to spawn into the world without a plane, after they had selected a plane from the deploy screen to spawn into.
  • Fixed a graphical bug that could occur if players sat in the top gunner seat in the Sturmgeschutz IV tank while firing it.
  • The Churchill MK VII top gunner turret no longer looks broken if the player uses the cover function from certain directions.
  • Improved the animation from third person when a player switches seats in an airplane.
  • Mounted and Coaxial Machine Guns have had a significant redesign. These weapons how have a converging accuracy model, with an initial period of inaccuracy that improves with shooting until the weapon is fully accurate. The accuracy potential of all these machine guns is higher now than it was previously, but only after firing a few rounds. Overheat has also been adjusted to balance with this new technique, allowing for more forgiving instances of overheat, especially when firing in long, suppressive bursts. Additionally, the velocity of rounds fired from the machine guns have been increased, making hitting targets of opportunity and moving targets easier, however the damage of these weapons has been reduced at long range, to prevent overly effective instances of sniping with the MG. You should now find MGs easier to use and hit targets once they are zeroed in, but targets at long range will have more time to react before they are killed outright.
  • Reduced the rate of fire for bomb loads of 4 or more. The high rate of fire of these bomb loads allowed a player to drop all their bombs effectively in one area, negating accuracy and making the choice between different bomb types poor. In general, there is a longer delay between bomb drops but bombs generally have more effective blast radius, especially against infantry.
  • Increased the default turret speeds and adjusted the acceleration and deceleration curves to be more responsive.
  • Reduced the impact of disabled turrets on the speed of the turret.
  • Improved the accuracy of the bomb sight in both First and Third person cameras. The biggest improvement is in the First Person View.
  • Holding the fire button while dropping multiple bombs will now update the target position for each bomb dropped.
  • Refactored Ammo Counts for vehicles with unlimited magazines so they show the ammo count instead of the total ammo. This fixes stationary AT guns showing 0 ammo when they actually have unlimited ammo.
  • Reduced the overheat and adjusted the explosive damage of the AA for consistent hit damage against bombers and fighters. Players should now get consistent damage against all aircraft types, and AA can now destroy an aircraft flying directly at the AA without overheating. Aircraft will need to be crafty and dodge and evade the more stationary AA, rather than simply absorbing the damage as they could do previously.
  • Increased shockwave time so that planes have a larger chance to escape the shockwave of low dropped bombs.
  • Fixed an exploit that would cause the Bleinheim passenger guns to not overheat.
  • Fixed a visual bug with the Mosquito 6PDR guns reload.
  • Improved the Kubelwagens steering animation and touched up the handling.
  • Tank turret aiming when using the chase camera (3p) has been redesigned.
    • The turret should now attempt to aim directly where you are looking.
    • The UI should now accurately reflect where the weapon is aiming.
    • If the weapon cannot physically shoot where you are aiming (because of objects in the environment etc), the UI should clearly reflect this.
    • 1p and zoomed aiming is not affected by these changes.
  • Flamethrowers attached to vehicles now also does damage to other vehicles, and these fires will linger for a while on vehicles and do damage over time
  • Flamethrowers on vehicles do more consistent damage over time on soldiers that get hit by it
  • Flamethrowers on vehicles now cause larger fires in the environment
  • The range of the flamethrowers on vehicles has decreased but the flame is more accurate.
  • The Archer APDS round has gotten an increase in the damage dealt to vehicles and also an increase in shell velocity.

General Audio Improvements

  • Tweaked the stereo output configuration to deliver a more balanced and readable downmix from the native surround mix, with increased low frequency response and improved clarity for sounds behind and outside of the player’s visual perspective.
  • Tweaks to how vehicle, explosion and weapon audio attenuates over distance with the aim of delivering higher consistency and a tighter, clearer mix.
  • Increased directionality in close to mid-range weapon audio.
  • Normalized distance delay on loud sounds like weapons and explosions, with more physically believable behavior. In most cases this equates to a shorter delay.
  • Tweaked the content of close, super-sonic bullet-pass bys for assault rifles to be clearer and consistent when compared with other weapon types.
  • Tweaked the processing of first person weapon audio to deliver a more ‘snappy’ (stronger initial transient) and ‘punchy’ (pre compression of the weapon audio prior to the master output) sound.
  • Fixed cases where the final mix was corrupted or distorted, due to performance fluctuations.
  • Smoothed the transitions from gameplay to deploy screen, and vice versa.
  • Third Person Movement (Footsteps) improvements, including;
    • Rebuilt and streamlined the logic and mixing behaviors from the ground up for improved stability, consistency and readability.
    • Third person footsteps are, on average, louder.

    • Reduced the volume difference between material types.
    • Reduced the effect that obstruction had on footstep volume.
    • Increased the mix difference between friendly and enemy footsteps in terms of volume, sense of weight and distance drop-off.
    • Enemies footsteps now have a higher priority in the mix and are now able to reduce other lower or distant sounds, in order to cut through the general combat soundscape more often.
    • Fixed instances of missing triggers for various movement based sounds. ‘Stutter stepping’ will more consistently cause triggers.
    • All non-footstep movement sounds such as vaulting, climbing, wall impacts, jumping, stance changes, crawling, equipment and weapon add movement are not down-prioritized for performance reasons anymore and play as a consistent package together with the footsteps now.

Every Matchup, Every Winner, All Of It.

First off, here's the foundation for these predictions:

G G H H G H G G H H H G H/T

(G = Gods win a round. H = Humanity wins a round. T = Both combatants die, ending in a tie.)

This is how I believe every round of this tournament will play out, and I'm pretty damn well sure it's how it will.
I believe that the Win/Loss order should be as gripping yet erratic as possible, but also balanced. What I mean by that is that it should be gripping in the sense that each side gets a bit of momentum so it's not just back and forth every round, but it also needs to be a bit erratic and break that momentum so it retains interest and doesn't become too predictable either. At the end of the day though, it also needs to be balanced throughout the whole of the tournament so we do get to see every fight. After all, if the Gods win every match from this point on, then the tournament would end quite early. So to recap: We need to establish an order that allows for suspense by striking a balance of ever-changing wins that doesn't sway too much in either team's direction so that every fighter gets the opportunity to participate.
Now that we've gone over that, we're going to look at each remaining fight in-depth:

5. Shiva vs. Raiden
- Since we're already knee-deep in this one, I'm just going to skip themes and volund and all that and just jump into how I think it'll go and why. First of all, at this point in time, Raiden is taking this fight extremely seriously. That's honestly a smart move as a combatant obviously, but really damn bad from a storytelling perspective. It means that though we've yet to see Raiden go all out and show every illegal move he's got tucked away, we haven't even seen Shiva reach that first step of taking this fight seriously.
So, following that train of thought, here's a simplified version of how I see this playing out: Raiden is going to beat the everliving shit out of Shiva using basic moves and a few illegal ones, Shiva's family is going to react to this, Shiva's going to snap out of his joking mood and start to take this shit seriously too once he realizes that this isn't just for fun - this is for his life. Now that they've both stopped fucking around, Raiden (who's already having issues with endurance if you noticed him having difficulty breathing) will pull out all his stops. Every ultimate move, every worst cheap banned and brutal martial art that he knows of, everything just to end this as quickly as possible. Then, once he's got Shiva on the ropes, that'll be it. That's when Raiden will die.
Two things will kill him essentially: Shiva's family, which may as well be plot armor (he has more to lose in this fight, giving him an edge in a plot mindset and greater motivation) and Raiden's low endurance, which is the price of his power.
TLDR: Raiden will lose once Shiva takes it seriously, which will only be after he's nearly killed in front of his family, and the final blow will be when Raiden's stamina runs out.

6. Susano'o vs. Okita
Volund: Hjörþrimul is likely to be his volund, considering she's referred to as "The Sword Warrioress" and Kojiro didn't use her. Alternatively though, he could also be paired with Kára since her name means "the wild, stormy one" hinting at his own personality as well as his opponent's overall aesthetic and how similar they are to one another.
- Now this one's pretty straightforward but it'll be badass nonetheless. Thematically this matchup seemed pretty obvious to me primarily because A. We only have one Japanese human swordsman left, and B. We only have one Japanese god swordsman left. It's certainly not the only reason and it's not as if there aren't other gods that use swords, but it's really the most prominent reason. It's incredibly likely that Okita is the last swordsman left on humanity's side and you're telling me that this manga series isn't going to take its last shot at a swordfight between gods and humanity? Sorry, but no.
Personality-wise, I'd imagine the author will make this a reflection rather than opposites like Kojiro and Poseidon. Many of us know what Okita will be like, he's essentially a young, rash, seemingly unstable prodigy with the blade. Then we have Susano'o... the God of Storms and the Sea, likely unstable in some ways as well considering many myths portray him as a wild, impetuous god. He's the younger brother of Amaterasu as well, so perhaps they'll age him down to mirror Okita even more. My reasoning for this being the next fight is obviously that Okita's been waiting in anticipation and he won't get cockblocked for both Raiden's fight AND the hypothetical different sixth fight, because that would be ridiculous and result in well over a year of waiting to see someone that really didn't need to be shown already impatiently waiting.
So yes, that being said, the winner will be Okita because he didn't exactly get to flourish during his life as he died at a young age (presumably before he ever hit his prime) due to TB. I imagine he's due for a W for all of the lost potential during his life, same as Kojiro, and it'd make for a nice little redemption after Raiden dies, since humanity will desperately need a pick-me-up for the next few fights.

7. Buddha vs. Kintoki
Volund: Skeggöld is the axe Valkyrie. It just works™.
- Now, this one's a bit of a journey so follow closely: A lot of people envision Kintaro when they think of this character since his Wikipedia page is covered in art and folk stories of the legendary pampers-wearing badass that beat the shit out of demons when he was learning his ABC's and even sumo-wrestled a bear. Yeah, I can see why you'd want to see that kid fighting hipster-Buddha, but no. Perhaps they'll take elements from the folk version, that could be cool honestly, but we're not focusing on the legendary kid. We're focusing on the actual person, Kinoki, and for good reason. Let me explain why real quick and then I'll move onto the actual fight.
There's not a lot of information on Kintoki, the actual man, but what we do know about him is that he was a great warrior and that he served as a retainer for the samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu. What's far more fascinating about the actual man that connects him to Buddha though, is that Kintoki studied martial arts and became renowned for his strength and martial prowess, eventually earning the title of chief of Yorimitsu's Shitennō. The Shitennō were an elite group consisting of four retainers that chose the moniker as a reference to the legendary Four Heavenly Kings from Buddhism. In essence, Kintoki was so badass at martial arts that he was eventually viewed in the same light as a Buddhist legend and now he's fighting Buddha himself. How perfect is that?
That being said, I'm sorry Kintoki, but you're totally going to die. First of all, you're really just screwed by the plot since Buddha was shown recently and we're definitely not going to get cockblocked that long for his fight either as I explained with Okita earlier. They're showing us these characters, so they have to fight relatively soon, and if I'm right about the Win/Loss order, then this is going to be an L for Humanity and sadly that means that Kintoki will have to die. I can easily see the author deciding that this will be a loss before really fleshing out the character and then leaning more toward the folk hero route to make us root for him. I also believe that as a writer that would really twist the knife in the audience's gut, since as a reader I'd totally want to root for a Japanese folk legend over hipster Buddha any day. I'd imagine that anyone going against Buddha would have a hard time, but I also think that being a legend in Buddhism is still pretty unfair when you're going against Buddha himself, so GG Kintoki.

8. Anubis vs. Qin
Volund: Hildr has the power to revive the dead in battlefields and use it to maintain the everlasting battle between Hedin and Högni. Terracotta bois, wya?
- Let's be honest, this one didn't surprise anyone. God of Death (As well as mummification, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld, etc) vs. Emperor that was obsessed with immortality and only feared death. In the twilight of his life, Qin Shi Huang had been absolutely obsessed with defying death as it was the only thing he hadn't conquered after being the first to unify China and invent the moniker of Emperor. Quite the badass, but pretty dumb as well considering he died after ingesting mercury in an attempt to create an immortality elixir. This isn't a history lesson though, I just wanted to show you how obsessed this man was with the exact thing that this god embodies.
Truth be told, I don't know a whole lot about Anubis but considering he's the god of tombs and Qin Shi quite literally constructed a mausoleum the size of a city and filled it with Terracotta soldiers, I don't consider it much of a reach that they'll come into play considering their sole purpose is to protect their Emperor in the afterlife.
Now that we've established that they're perfect for one another, let me tell you all of the ways that Anubis will wipe the floor with Qin Shi. Historically, Qin Shi got everything he wanted in life and we all know what happens to those that win while they're alive. They don't win in death, not often. That's why Lu Bu got destroyed by Thor and why I imagine at this point in time that Raiden will lose to Shiva. Winners in life become losers in Ragnarok and vice versa as proven by Kojiro. Sure, Qin Shi did lose to death in the end, but there's a reason why.
If it were anyone else, I'd give it to them, but Qin Shi is a bit too obsessed with conquering this one, leaving the storyteller in me to believe that it's a goal far too aligned with his personal motivation and the reader in me far too hopeful to see this one futile man trying to defy the scariest force of nature. I root for the mere concept of this man far too much, so he's undoubtedly going to fail in his ambitious endeavor, leaving us all feeling quite a bit less hopeful at the end of it all.

9. Bishamonten vs. Nostradamus
Volund: Skuld is the most fitting Valkyrie for Nostradamus considering her name essentially means "Debt" and is related to the English word "Should". Along with Urðr (Old Norse "Fate") and Verðandi (possibly "Happening" or "Present"), Skuld makes up a trio of Norns that are described as deciding the fates of people. Nostradamus' whole shtick was prophecy, therefore his best bet this fight is the power of prediction, and who better to help him than essentially one of the three Fates of Norse mythology? Alternatively, Svipul could be his volund as her name presumably refers to the changeable nature of fate.
- Considering Nostradamus' main deal was fate-related and that he'll surely be weaponizing his predictions, it seems fitting that his opponent will be one of the Seven Lucky Gods that'll definitely be utilizing his prowess in battle against Nostradamus as well. As an armor-clad god of war in Japan, Bishamonten will likely be a physically intimidating warrior, wielding a great spear that'll give him reach that Nostradamus won't have. Considering I couldn't find any formal training of martial arts or weapon expertise in his history and he wasn't exactly benching books in his free time, he'll likely have to primarily dodge for the vast majority of the fight and exploit the smallest of openings similar to what Jack did if he wants to deal any damage.
I'm not entirely sure what he'll use as a weapon during his fight, but I do think that his past as a physician will come into play somehow. Perhaps he'll be surgical in his methods, carefully setting the stage and leading Bishamonten into traps similar to what Jack did. Honestly, the more I think about this fight, the more I see it as a plaything for Nostradamus since I can't imagine him even stepping into the ring if he's destined to die. Aside from fitting into my W/L order, Nostradamus seems fated to win this because thematically it just makes sense that no amount of luck can outperform fate.

10. Beelzebub vs. Rasputin
Volund: Although Hildr was my first instinct for Rasputin since the guy was comically hard to fucking kill, Göndul seems like the most fitting for him since Qin Shi has already taken Hildr since she's most fitting for him as well and after reading up on Göndul, trust me... you'll be convinced too by the time I'm done. Her name means "wand-wielder", which could easily tie into Rasputin's mysticism. Alright then, that was easy. Oh yeah, she also hangs out with two Kings in one story, Hedinn of Serkland and Hogni of Denmark, seducing them both via a memory-altering drought. Alright, that's pretty Rasputin of her to bang royalty and manipulate them, ngl. Oh, and then she proceeds to watch over both of their kingdoms as they wage war until they're on civil terms and then proceeds to fuck them over one last time, resulting in their doom and making them regret they ever met her. That is literally Rasputin's life right there, folks.
- Now that we know how Rasputin will fight and how shitty of a person he is, I'd like to introduce you to Beelzebub. Beelzebub has a surprisingly amount of meanings attached to his character though not very many stories, so you could spend a long time finding different interpretations of this character but you'll never really know which one the author will choose... unless you look at every other god in this series and notice what's not there. Christianity doesn't play a part in this series at all and it doesn't take a genius to see why, it's controversial and this series just wants to have fun and be goddamn amazing, and I don't blame the author for it at all. That being said, if there's one character that I'm absolutely positive the author is itching to use, it's Satan. There's no real devil in this series, even Loki doesn't really embody that symbol of pure evil, he's just Loki and that's fine. But I find it incredibly likely that the author essentially wanted to have a devil without calling him Satan, Lucifer, or any other even minorly controversial moniker. I think that Beelzebub is the safest alias to use for this devil archetype and for that purpose, the author was smart to use it.
That being said, we've established who Beelzebub will embody: The Devil. He'll be evil, ugly, 1000% utilize his wings since Beelzebub can essentially be interpreted as "Lord of Flies", "Lord of Fliers", or even "Lord of High Place" so the sky's the limit. Since he'll be a typical aerial devil, I'd imagine that Rasputin will need something long-range like a wand to utilize his mysticism. As for the winner... well, I suppose I should mention the overall theme since I forgot to do that, but I'd imagine it's pretty obvious at this point. They're the shittiest people in existence and that's really it. Rasputin was allegedly an evil person, manipulating royals and wielding their hope against them and apparently capitalizing on recoveries done in pure luck, fueling his reputation and enjoying all of the benefits of that by seducing believers and royals alike, whether they were married or he was. He wasn't a great person at all and that much is clear, which is why we need someone either equally horrible or worse and that's why Beelzebub needs to be Satan in this series. So we feel conflicted whether the demon wins or well... if the other demon wins. If you're wondering why Rasputin will win though, you need not go any further than recalling Brun's quote during Jack's fight:
The only way in which men are superior to the gods is malice.

11. Apollo vs. Simo
Volund: A lot of people throw out Hlaðguðr Svanhvít's name due to the parallelism between Simo's nickname "The White Death" and her name's meaning of "Swan-white", but that's literally all there is to it. It's not bad, but it's not enough and it's not the best either. For a bit I moved on to other volunds, like Mist who could control, well, mist. Clouds make for great cover for a sniper, so it's possible that this could help camouflage Simo as well as suppress Apollo's light/heat/sun and all that, but even so, that's not the best volund for Simo in my eyes. What I settled on was Ölrún, or if you're going by Old High German, Ailrun. This is important, so keep it in mind. In Germanic mythology, Ailrun is the wife of Agilaz, the legendary archer, though he also goes by Egil. I know, but that's the end of the name-tracking, don't worry. Egil was a renowned archer who defended a keep together with his wife, Aliruna, against numerous attackers. If holing up with your husband and defending a keep with just a bow doesn't scream "I'm the sniper's volund" to you, then I don't really know what to say at this point. Considering Simo's got a kill count of over 500, it sounds like Ölrún's in good hands though.
- One of my favorite matchups in theory, this one was probably the easiest to see and the earliest that I knew I wanted to see. Apollo has a sword, but he's credited with the invention of archery as well as the god of archery. He's also the god of the sun, light, poetry, music and various other things, but I want to focus on what I've mentioned and how much Sim contrasts him in nearly every way possible except for one. Apollo embodies two things: Heat and Communication. He is essentially the sun, riding a chariot across the sky every day and bringing warmth to others through music and poetry and interacting with all of life. He's a bright guy and then... there's Simo. Simo is from Finland, where the cold can kill a man. He spent a great deal of time in the military as a sniper, which isn't a very social job, so to speak. A sniper is often isolated, alone, waiting patiently in the elements for the right time to strike. Simo was pretty creative when he sniped as well, choosing iron-sights over newer, easier scopes for practical reasons such as wishing not to reflect light and also putting dense amounts of snow in his mouth so his breath wouldn't alert enemy snipers of his position. He killed over 500 people in service to the Finnish military and yet hardly spoke a word of it for the rest of his life. Simo's entire character can be summarized as quiet, isolated and even cold in contrast to Apollo's vibrant, social, and warm demeanor. It's odd to see a human occupying this space in this particular series, but Simo really is the winter to Apollo's summer and it's a perfect contrast.
Except when we talk about weapons. Since Apollo is the god of archery, it seems pretty clear that he's going to have a bow. Simo is, of course, going to use his main weapon, a Mosin–Nagant Model 28-30 sniper rifle that he clocked in over 259 kills alone with, before doubling the count with his Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun. It seems likely that the sniper rifle will be his volund initially, but there's also the real possibility that ammunition will be the real volund since the vast amount of enemies that both Simo and Ölrún dealt with were their biggest issue and it's possible that he'll run out eventually unless he has an infinite supply. It would make for a nice surprise as well, seeing Simo pull out his submachine gun at closer ranges and being able to utilize it without it being useless. Also, there's something that I haven't mentioned because most already know about it, but Simo was discharged from the military due to an injury that blew off basically half his face, due to an explosive round from an enemy sniper. Imagine the sneakiest, big-brain, high-IQ move of Simo shooting Apollo square in the face with nowhere to run, only to have him catch the seemingly harmless bullet before Simo shoots it with a normal one and blows it up, disfiguring Apollo as well. Personally, I'd love the shit out of that. Anyways, Simo's going to get this one both on account of A. The whole W/L order, B. Simo's sudden retirement and loss of a real drive in life, and C. His quiet demeanor and Apollo's sheer likability. I get the feeling that Simo's win will be incredibly big-brain since the real person always found a way to make it work in his favor through practicality and sheer patience. You got this Simo, we believe in you.

12. Loki vs. Tesla
Volund: Brun, Brun, Brun... oh boy. Let me start by saying that this entire fight as well as the final fight up next are both going to go exactly like this exclusively because of the valkyries involved. That being said, let's dive into some etymology. In its various forms, Brunhild is derived from the equivalents of Old High German brunia (armor) and hiltia (conflict), thereby making a good ol' combo of war armor. Who needs war armor more than arguably anyone else on this list? The scrawny inventor is probably a good bet. Who's the smartest, most devious person on humanity's side? If you answered either Brun or Tesla, you're right, which is why they're the perfect duo. That being said, they're such a badass, big-brain duo that it seems fitting that they'd have to face off against the only opponent capable of outwitting them. Now, I have a strange theory about how she'll be Tesla's battle armor but I don't want to spoil the surprise, so read down below if you want to know one way that I think she'll help him.
- Here we are... the much-awaited fight between the two three biggest brains in this entire tournament. Following the previous fight, this one will definitely raise the stakes quite a bit by Brun being part of it. It won't feel like your average bout between a god and human that we've never seen before, it'll feel like the endgame since we've already become well-acquainted with the god and valkyrie by this point and only one of them is going to make it out alive. The themes are pretty damn easy to spot and numerous if you care to find them: Truth vs. Deception, Intellect vs. Deviousness, Science vs. Magic, there's a lot and more that I just haven't thought of in these last 10 seconds, but they're there. Now, this is definitely going to take place in Tesla's lab or some location of Tesla's choice because why wouldn't it? Now then, since it'll take place in a lab or technologically advanced setting, Tesla will definitely have a lot of tools at his disposal during this fight. Imagine Jack, except with a brilliant scientist/inventor.
Now, I have a theory of how this'll play out but it's more wishful thinking than anything. I imagine Loki in a lab, stumbling upon a contraption. Robot, mech, whatever you want to call it, it's basically iron man with Brun infused in it and Tesla piloting it. Loki will fight it, wrestle and tumble and struggle and be very deceptive as they hunt one another down in a lab setting with various chemicals, tools and technological wonders at Tesla's disposal. It'll be just as amazing as the sentence "Loki will fight a mech'd out Tesla in a laboratory" full of moments where Tesla nearly kills Loki with sheer technological firepower and ingenuity until... Loki finally destroys it. He kills Brun in the process, breaking the volund mech. Tesla too it seems, until it's revealed that Tesla was actually never in it. That Tesla was actually crafting a far more dangerous weapon from a safe distance, one that can kill Loki. Call it a death ray, if you will. He uses it as it's his last hope now that Brun is gone, but... before he can, Loki actually does kill him. This is obviously just how I envision it, but considering what the author's done so far, this wouldn't be too far out there and would feel in line with the way that they write and manage to do every character justice. So yeah, sadly deception would triumph, leaving Brun dead and Göll broken, yet also incredibly motivated right on time for the final match.

13. Odin vs. Leonidas(?)
Volund: Geir, Göll, whatever the shit you want to call her. It's actually Göll, but translation errors caused many to call her Geir funnily enough, which I think was a stroke of luck since Geir is a root for multiple other valkyries' names and it means "Spear", which is the weapon that I actually believe Göll will be as a volund, but that's for later. Her name has up to three different meanings: "Noisy", "Loud cry", or "Battle cry". We've seen her be noisy quite a bit, as she's often whining and really not on top of any situation. But I think after the previous match and losing Brun, she'll finally have a reason to weep or "Loud cry" and during the intermission she'll find the courage to be the person that Brun wished her to be - the savior of Humanity. At this point, for this final battle, she'll probably still have a bit of nerves, but she'll be determined enough to go through with it and step into that "Battle cry" phase of her name. Maybe I'm looking into it too much and I could easily be wrong about the etymology's impact on her character development, but I really do think that thematically it would be nice to end her story with a massive growth like this and, sadly, Brun will need to die in order to achieve that growth in Göll. Anyways, yeah. She's going to be a spear, because Leonidas is all that's left and she's going to need some way to inflict damage. Leo primarily uses a sword, but considering he'll be going up against Odin who also wields a spear that never misses, I'd imagine Leonidas will have a spear volund too. Also, the Geir thing really does seem prophetic in a really weird meta way.
- Oh boy, we're at the end of it all... first up are themes and reasons. Themes are clearly Last Stands first and foremost. Who embodies humanity's last stand more from humanity's list than King Leonidas that died during a last stand against the Persians at Thermopylae? The guy's entire legendary life ended with a last stand, and that's enough for me but I'll keep going. Odin is clearly final boss level, and it seems fitting considering this is the Record of Ragnarok. The title itself is a clear reference to Norse mythology, and the whole point of it all is to rise against the gods, so it seems to fit pretty snuggly that the final boss is the patriarch of the Norse pantheon. He also has perfectly low-key final boss vibes from a storytelling perspective in the sense that he's been shown many, many, maaaany times though never given a spotlight, never spoken (himself, at least), and he's on the roster. It's perfect, establishing a villain early on but waiting till it's his turn to let him shine. He's the wisest of the gods, it makes sense as to why he'd go last since he'd probably want to predict who he'll go against and use that knowledge to increase his odds of winning. Oh yeah, they're also both wise Kings that led great warriors into battle. It's not very specific, but you wouldn't find that sort of mirror image between any other god and human aside from perhaps Qin Shi Huang and Bishamonten. Now that we're past all the ways that they're perfect for one another, let's move onto the final battle.
Let's get two things straight: I don't have a damn clue how the actual fight will go down, but I'm damn sure that Odin isn't winning*. That would just be wayyy too depressing of an ending to let humanity get this far and then have them lose. It doesn't matter how nice of a light you view that in, whether the gods are kind and merciful and go "Gee whiz, champ, you humans sure put up a good fight! Guess you can live," Nah. That takes away the entire point of this series and Shiva's entire rant about breaking free from the gods' shackles. We NEED to win. So I'm going to operate based upon the presumption that we WILL win. I'm going to assume that this will be a hopeful ending for humanity and that every fight, but more importantly every death, will not be in vain. That we can achieve this impossible goal if we work together, with humanity, with volunds, against fate itself and all that gooey shit. So that being said, it's likely that Leonidas with the help of Göll will defeat Odin and redeem himself for dying at Thermopylae, likely in a fashion that would do his character justice, such as dodging Gungnir (Odin's spear that never misses) and managing to hit Odin with Göll, as he couldn't do to Xerxes at Thermopylae. Humanity will win, the Valkyries will have accomplished their goal. All will be right again and it'll be deemed that humanity has earned their right to survive. Roll curtain, folks.

Author's Notes
At the end of the day, I tried to approach every fight from at least four different standpoints: A writer's standpoint, a reader's standpoint, a historian's standpoint, and at the end of it all, I asked myself if it just seemed right. If every little bit clicked together neatly and if that clicked with the author's style. If what I envision when I add it all together really is what I expect from this manga series, and after taking it all into consideration, I have to say... it makes perfect sense, honestly, every single bit of it.
I 1000% believe this will happen, but I also recognize that there's clearly a real possibility that the author may very well just go with even one different matchup*, leaving a vast majority of this to crumble really badly. That's alright, honestly, I do this for fun because I love the series so it's perfectly fine if I'm wrong because I know that no matter what the author will blow our goddamn minds and it'll be beautiful regardless.

* If I could add two notes at the end of this all, I'd allow myself the wiggle room of poooooossibly switching Kintoki and Nostradamus because Buddha, Bishamonten and Kintoki are all very closely tied to Buddhism, leaving open the very real possibility that Nostradamus could fight Buddha instead and Kintoki could fight Bishamonten. It wouldn't change a whole lot for Kintoki honestly, considering that Bishamonten seems quite similar to Buddha in nature anyways, being one of the Four Heavenly Kings within Buddhism. If anything, it would allow both fighters to have means of defending themselves and allow for a more action-oriented fight between a spear-wielding god and a martial arts legend of humanity, which arguably sounds pretty damn cool. It would also make for a pretty fitting matchup since Bishamonten is closely linked to monetary wealth and Kintoki is the Golden Boy and all that. That would also lead to Nostradamus vs. Buddha, which in itself could work quite well thematically since the basic tenets of Buddhism are that nothing is fixed or permanent, actions have consequences, and that change is possible. That would certainly make for quite the philosophical debate, if not physical spectacle against someone so fate-oriented and driven by prophecy and pre-ordained events. So yeah, now you know the one single little matchup that I'll allow wiggle room. Everything else is non-negotiable though, so don't worry, I'm not backtracking on anything.
My second note would be the possibility of a tie that I mentioned at the very start with my W/L order and the fact that I never addressed that. If I'm being honest, it's almost guaranteed that humanity WILL win, but on the off-chance that Odin and Leonidas kill each other at the very end, it would also make sense for many reasons. 1. Leonidas is very under-equipped for that matchup, so unless he has multiple volunds (which would be pretty goddamn amazing and I'd love to see that, ngl) then he'll probably struggle a LOT. 2. Odin's spear, Gungnir, literally never misses. Imagine trying to live against that, even with a shield. 3. Leonidas DID die at Themopylae, so although thematically it'd make more sense to let him redeem himself and live this time, perhaps it wouldn't be too sad if he died again as long as humanity got to survive. A double K.O. wouldn't be too bad in that event. And last but not least, 4. If there's one good lesson that I considered everyone taking away from this story in the event of a tie, it's partially that the gods aren't better than humanity, which, yeah, no shit. We all knew that the second that Kojiro murdered Poseidon and everyone lost their shit. But, the rest of the lesson is that humanity aren't better than the gods either. If I'm right about Rasputin vs. Beelzebub, or about Rasputin winning at all against anyone, then that proves that. Some of us are really shitty people, with great potential to be even shittier. So if there's one thing that a tie would tell us that a win wouldn't, it's that neither gods nor humans are better than one another. We're equal and maybe that's not entirely a bad thing. Maybe one side doesn't have to be better or stronger or faster or smarter than the other. Maybe we should be happy with just being. Maybe the real friends we made along the way were the Frog-sama memes.

In any case, thank you all for making it to the end and I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I do.
