On 10th March 2020, news broke about Deepak Nitrite Limited, which filed INR 370 Crore (USD 55 Million) suit against its junior-level employee in marketing.
I naturally got curious about this news, thanks to my regular meetings with their IT team to position BLACKbox for the prevention of Data Theft from the laptops. Our discussions always concluded with a note: All is Well, We don’t need anything.
Let me set the right context for this blog. Deepak Nitrite Limited is a large enterprise. It has access to the best of the IT talent, legal advisors and can spend significantly to fight, prove and recover the damages. It has got all the might to set an example. Most of my SME readers don’t have any. Nevertheless, SMEs have a serious take-away from the details of this sub judice suite.
Let me focus on explaining why this commonly happens and deriving the learning value for my SME readers.
The difference in Perceptions of CVD (Competitive Value of Data):
There is always a difference in perception of the value of digital assets like designs, drawings, recipes, formulations, cost sheets, non-disclosure agreements, tender bids, research reports. There is a stark contrast between the owner’s and the IT executive’s perception of the CVD.
IT executives mostly focus on backup practices to protect data from loss. CVD is beyond their understanding. Higher the CVD more is the severity of the Competitive Vulnerability. Owners understand the true CVD and would, in all possibilities, like to avoid Competitive Vulnerability. Here, in the case we are taking as an example, I am sure the IT department would not have valued the allegedly stolen data being worth INR 370 CR.
Skewed Investments in Data Theft Prevention Solutions
Most IT executives think that Data Theft is synonymous with Hacking. They have a one-track mind to focus on keeping external hackers away. They heavily invest in Firewalls, UTMs, and Gateway level security. They mostly ignore and underestimate the possibility of Data Theft by internal employees. They grossly ignore laptop users, remote office users, and BYOD (Bring Your Device) users. In an SME environment, Data Theft is more likely by internal employees than by external hackers. Our product BLACKbox focusses on preventing Data Theft by internal employees as much as it keeps hackers away.
Obsession of Doing it Myself
Many IT executives avoid buying readymade and fit-to-purpose products and try to do it themselves. We call it “Jugaad.” They seriously expose their employer to Data Theft risk and potential damages. Ten holes require ten seals. Jugaad to seal six holes will not stop the leakage. Let experts do it, nothing personal. BLACKbox prevents data theft from Mobiles, Tablets, Laptops, and Desktops through USB, Email Attachments, Blind Carbon Copy, and the Internet.
Monitoring versus ControlsIt is just impossible to monitor every user’s every email attachment, blind carbon copy, internet session, and USB access. Forwarding every email to a single mailbox, or blocking social media and shopping websites, or disconnecting USB ports do not serve the purpose. Most monitoring can only happen when the user is inside the office environment. It just doesn’t work. There are smarter ways to minimize monitoring by maximizing controls. BLACKbox works on the principle of maximum controls and minimum monitoring. Its innovative design makes monitoring trigger-based.
ECC (Evidence Creation Capability)
There are two types of enterprises. Those who have to trust people and those who opt to trust people. Enterprise’s ability to generate and preserve the evidence will decide whether to trust people by choice or by compulsion. Any act by users, may it be deletion, blind carbon copy, data upload to the third party if it is triggered and evidenced, users will think twice before cheating. BLACKbox has smart policies to trigger alert over an attempt, product evidence, and playback computer screens for any investigations.
A Megabyte of Prevention is worth more than a Gigabyte of Cure.
The credit of my last sentence goes to Mr. Nikhil Gupta, Managing Director of Auto Steel and Rubber Industries Pvt Ltd, Pune. He coined this sentence during our meeting during my Pune visit.

World MSME Day: Are MSMEs Still Relying Too Much On Jugaad?

World MSME Day: Are MSMEs Still Relying Too Much On Jugaad?

https://preview.redd.it/kwb869ua6z241.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6885bd4227314d78899033ec473a128c420ab8cb
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) officially added the word ‘Jugaad’ in their 2016 update. OED defines the word as ‘a flexible approach to problem-solving that uses limited resources in an innovative way’. Indeed, in the context of small and medium businesses (SMB), jugaad is not just an English word, it’s a business philosophy. After the invention of 0, if there is anything that has helped economists and businessmen alike, it’s jugaad. If 0 gave us the ability to THINK huge numbers, jugaad gave us the proficiency to ACHIEVE those numbers.
However, for SMBs especially the Indian MSMEs, has jugaad been exploited too much that it has become a weakness for these businesses? Can a jugaad approach ensure continued growth? The word may have outlived its utility and now it has become an excuse for MSMEs to work around problems, adopting short cuts for small term gains. Jugaad has stopped being a strategic approach ensuring long term growth. On this MSME day, A&A Business Consulting, while it salutes the enterprising spirit of MSMEs, also encourages them to adopt a more structured approach. In other words, look beyond ONLY jugaad.
A promise to deliver high quality products and services to thousands of customers can never be obtained only by jugaad. It requires a perfect mix of relevant market information, making use of tried and tested management principles, adherence to statutory compliance, adoption of technology and a multi-avenue approach to counter financial crunch.
According to Jun Zhang, the country head for the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the number of MSMEs in the U.S have grown by 16 times whereas in India they have shrank by 40% in a 10 year study period.
Why do you think such disparity exists?
It exists because of the difference in the strategies implemented in a company’s everyday functioning once it has ensured its survival. While SMBs outside India are process driven and compliant, here the MSMEs depend too much on jugaad, which is not enough to ensure financial growth and profitability for MSMEs.
To come out of this quagmire, it requires a combined response from the government and the MSME community. But for the MSMEs to leverage Government aids, it first must come under the pale of regulatory and apex bodies. This calls for a compliant business and shunning the Jugaad strategy. Most importantly, the MSMEs have to change their way of thinking and execution. They have to become eligible for using different kinds of financial tools to get easy access to finance.
The economic growth of the country can be fully tapped only by ensuring the expansion of private sector of which 40% belongs to MSMEs. This requires abandoning overdependence on jugaad and taking a structured approach. India under this new government is changing. A&A experts are convinced that within next 5 years, it will be impossible to evade necessary regulations and MSMEs will be forced to toe the line. Why wait for a day when you are penalized for relying too much on jugaad? Start making your business process and system driven, today! A&A Business Consulting can help.

Why Only “Jugaadu” Event Managers Succeed

“A stitch in time saves nine”- when you resolve the problem immediately it may save undue efforts.
By ignoring formal education one might still qualify as an event manager but ignoring cognitive skills might not qualify him as the best event manager. The event manager is swamped through unseen and unexpected problems during an event. But a good event manager has a tendency to recuperate any fragile event by applying his “Jugaad” tactics or ingenuity under any circumstances.
The word “Jugaad” means a quick patch to any problem or issues, few like to call it as a“short-cut”. The word was less familiar to the world unless aSeminar in Chicago by PCMA on Frugal Innovative Approach for Events elicited its advantages.
It emerged from India and now popular around the globe but with different names---- Brazilians call it gambiarra; the Chinese, zizhu chuangxin; and the Kenyans, jua kali and so on. With shrinking economy, “Jugaad” approach is getting better and better responses especially from countries having the higher growth economy.
Coming out with a novel solution in adverse condition is the pedigree of human race and that's what describes ““Jugaad” the best.It pushes human intelligence to think out of the trend that sometimes appears witty and humorous but work quite effectively, especially when the source is scant or minimum to complete the task.
When you swirl into the “Jugaadu” situation your reserve neurons get activated and tells you- “Hey there is no need of doing things in one way”. Soon your brain picks up the best solution to neutralize the issue. There is always a way out to encounter any problem, possibly the approaches may be different. For instance, 3+2 is also 5 and 4+1 is also 5.
There are the countless epitome of “Jugaadu” work that you might have heard like - a solar based bicycle, an earthen-ware cooler or water purifier, a motorcycle operated water pump, ammonia and water based lamp, etc. Even you might have fixed numerous domestic crisis using the same approach like water dripping from faucet, broken specs frame, extending remote battery life, crossing-over a rainy puddle, with some basic skills and handful of local appliances. I guess this qualifies you as Jugaadians.
There is no apprenticeship program or registered training to be a Jugaadian, this is something you nurture over time by observing and following your gut feeling with some blend of intelligence.
Being Jugaadians from Event Perspective
Event Industry is huge and managing an event is a big task. Preparing yourself for last moment changes and solving unexpected issues in the event is not an event manager’s choice but a protocol.
Below mentioned are few characteristics you must abide to be on the rim of successful event managers.
Principles of “Jugaad”
1) Seek opportunity in adversity
There is a famous quote “out of adversity comes opportunity”. Tapping on favorable condition is not always going to happen in events. Sometimes capitalizing on the given situation is the ideal solution. For example, you have to hold an event in a ground having deep pot-hole, then you can probably use the pot-hole in your favour – maybe by creating a fountain around it or a smoking zone for attendees or even a campfire setting around it.
2) Do more with less
Shoestring budget and meeting client expectation without compromising is often a scenario in Events. In such situation, adapting to frugal approach like replacing poster or banner with digital signage that can be reused again is more preferable than getting roasted on your limited resources. There is also a possibility that you are not using resources completely, by using it profoundly you can optimize the resource and can do more with less.
3) Think and act flexibly
To get away with Jugaads, you have to be proactive than reactive. It is just like a rapid fire round-- spontaneous and witty. During outdoor events if rain is not part of your backup plan then provide temporary sheds to guests where they quickly snug in and brag about the weather with the glass of champagne. If the event is on a small scale, then tapping and twining a foldable tent can be your anti-rain “Jugaad”.
4) Keep it simple
Jugaad work doesn't demand high technical arrangement but instead a simple design for time-being that meets the purpose. For instance in an event, if showcasing all the product manually at the same time is an issue, you can use a rotational stand instead. This should save your money spent on hiring another stall, at the same time it is easy to display the items.
5) Tap the margins of society
Jugaadu tricks so far were applied only to a domestic or at alower level but entrepreneurs Jugaad innovators have the broad perspective on it. They pulled it off as a mainstream business idea. To execute them it becomes necessary that you understand customers need and identify the product prospects from customer’s point of view. For example, a bicycle attached with a wheelchair could be a great value to give a park-ride to someone who is physically challenged or an aged person.
6) Finally follow your heart
For a good reason, we are gifted with a heart that is not just refrained to our body anatomy but referred to our emotional intelligence and basic instinct. Jugaad innovators have to take decisions not formerly based on research but what their customers feel about the product or their ideas.
Jugaad Innovators are today’s Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, their ideas can be a game-changer, where entrepreneurs can revive the squeezed economy by turning their ideas into business models.
Let us know what “Jugaad” you know that stands for the best!
